Missions: Home of Life (Hogar De Vida)

By James Devers

On April 20,2015, our family had the privilege of visiting Hogar De Vida (Home of Life) in Atenas, Costa Rica. Hogar De Vida is a Christian mission home that provides transitional foster care services to up to 35 children at a time. Hogar’s primary population ranges in age from newborn to about 5 years old.

When we originally planned our trip to Costa Rica back in December, it was intended to be a “regular” vacation. However, through a series of divinely arranged interactions in the 10 days prior to our departure, a mission visit to Hogar was added.

We (James & Tamisha) have been donors to Hogar for about a year through their child sponsorship program. We received a “thank you” e-mail inviting us to come to Hogar for a free hug. Since we were already planning to be in country, we reached out the director of the home who gave us information about visitation options and their list of priority needs in terms of supplies. We then made an appeal to our local churches (Bethel Temple Church in Columbus, OH and Visions of Victory in Kalamazoo, MI) just a few days prior to departure and were overwhelmed by the response!

A total of over $1,300 in cash was donated plus many of the requested supplies, which allowed us to:

  • Provide a “fellowship meal” for all of the staff and children of the home.
  • Purchase and bring all of the items on Hogar’s priority list: two laptop computers, two car seats and two sets of hair clippers.
  • Purchase and collect enough requested supplies to fill two suitcases. The suitcases contained: baby & children’s clothing and underwear, bed and crib sheets, medicines, clothespins and other items (see below).

hogar collage 3As an example of God’s timing, one of the laptops used by the staff died the night before we arrived! So Hogar’s director was extra excited about the timing of the arrival of the new laptops, as this was another testimony to him of how God takes care of Hogar. In addition to bringing supplies, we were able to attend the home’s morning devotional, interact for a couple hours with the children and talk with the staff of Hogar to learn more about the mission’s current work and the many things God worked out to get them to this point.

Please visit http://www.homesoflife.org/costa-rica.htm to learn more about Hogar De Vida and ways that you and your family can support their work.

Senior Day – April 2014

Walmart and Bethel Temple Ministries Partner
for Senior Appreciation Day

Columbus, April 2014 – On Thursday, April 24th, from 10 am.  – noon, the South High Street Walmart location partnered with Bethel Temple Ministries for Senior Appreciation Day. Designed to serve the community, this day will be filled with an array of services that will address the needs of individuals 55 and over.

Taking place at the Bethel Temple Ministry Center, located at 2900 Lockbourne Rd. (on the corner of Lockbourne Rd. and Watkins Rd.), this event provided a variety of free items donated by Walmart and Bethel Temple Ministries. Items given away will include such things as clothing for men, women and children; shoes; hair products; personal hygiene products; cleaning materials; yard maintenance materials and more. In addition, organizations were on-site to provide blood pressure screenings and diabetes testing. Refreshments were served and door prizes given, all in an attempt to meet the needs of the community.

“The need within the community is so great, especially for our seniors,” says Phyllis Viney. “They are struggling with limited income and we wanted to help provide assistance for them. Things like this help us to help meet the need of our community.”

According to Viney, who is a member of Bethel Temple, her boss at Walmart and her pastor share the same vision. “We asked Walmart if they would partner with us in this area. We are out here and have a lot of needs that need to be met in this community. The bible says you have not because you ask not, and when we asked Walmart they immediately said yes.”

Walmart’s mission is to create opportunities so people can live better. Considering it to be their responsibility to make a positive impact in the communities that they serve, whether through the grants they provide to thousands of organizations that share their mission or through the inspiring volunteer efforts of Walmart associates, they are passionate about helping people live better. One community at a time.

“Working with Walmart is a blessing,” says Senior Pastor, Dane D. Clark. “It allows us together to help meet the spiritual and natural needs of our community and I believe this partnership  will help us create a stronger community.”

Bethel Temple Ministries has been located in the Southfield community of Columbus, Ohio for over 20 years. The ministry seeks to build upon these roots to produce a harvest of resources the will benefit our community and its citizens.
